ENG Crew with LiveU: What to Expect on Shoot Day
February 28, 2023When you hire a professional ENG crew, you’re not just hiring people — you’re hiring a fully equipped mobile broadcast unit. Understanding what kit they carry helps you brief them correctly and ensures your production has everything it needs. Here’s what a professional ENG crew typically brings on location.
Broadcast Camera
The centrepiece of any ENG kit. Professional ENG crews use broadcast-standard cameras — most commonly the Sony XDCAM series (PXW-Z280, PXW-FX9, or similar), Canon Cinema EOS, or equivalent. These cameras record in 4K or Full HD with professional codecs (XAVC, XDCAM HD422) that meet broadcast delivery requirements. Consumer cameras and mirrorless stills cameras are generally not suitable for broadcast delivery.
Audio Equipment
Clean audio is as important as sharp video. A professional ENG crew carries:
- Directional (shotgun) microphone — mounted on camera or boom pole for ambient and interview sound
- Wireless lapel system — for interviews, presenter pieces to camera, or any situation where the subject needs freedom of movement
- Portable audio mixer or recorder — for more complex multi-source audio situations
- IFB/earpiece — for live broadcasts, so the reporter can hear the studio director or programme output
Lighting
For interviews and indoor shoots, portable LED panels are standard. A basic ENG lighting kit includes a key light, and sometimes a fill or backlight for more polished setups. For news situations and run-and-gun shooting, a small on-camera LED panel provides quick, usable light without setup time.
Support and Stabilisation
- Tripod with fluid head — for stable interviews and formal setups
- Monopod — for mobility in crowds or when following action
- Shoulder rig — for handheld shooting with stability and broadcast ergonomics
Live Transmission: The LiveU Unit
For live broadcasts, the ENG crew carries a LiveU cellular bonding unit (typically an LU600 or LU800). This bonds multiple 4G/5G SIM cards into a single reliable connection, allowing broadcast-quality video to be transmitted to a studio or streaming platform from virtually anywhere — no satellite truck required. The LiveU unit connects to the camera via SDI and is powered by its own battery.
Storage and Backup
Professional ENG crews carry multiple media cards and often a portable SSD or laptop for in-field backup — essential if footage needs to be sent digitally or the card is damaged. For live productions, a simultaneous local recording alongside the LiveU transmission ensures a clean backup copy.
Power
Spare batteries for camera, LiveU, audio, and lighting. For longer shoots, a portable power station or V-lock battery system keeps everything running without needing mains power.
