Live Stream benefits: Elevating Your live-stream
December 18, 2022If you work in broadcast media or are hiring video production services for the first time, you’ve likely come across the term “ENG crew.” Here’s a clear breakdown of what it means, who’s involved, and how these teams operate.
What Does ENG Stand For?
ENG stands for Electronic News Gathering. The term dates back to the 1970s when broadcasters first replaced film cameras with electronic video cameras, enabling faster turnaround for news stories. Today, ENG refers to any small, mobile crew that captures video in the field — for news, documentaries, corporate content, or live events.
Who Is in an ENG Crew?
A standard ENG crew consists of one to three people, depending on the complexity of the production:
- Camera operator — handles framing, focus, and exposure. On smaller shoots, they also manage audio and basic lighting.
- Sound recordist — manages microphones, monitors audio levels, and ensures clean dialogue capture. On larger productions, this is a dedicated role.
- Producer/reporter — not always part of the technical crew, but often travels with them to direct interviews and manage editorial decisions on location.
For live broadcasts, an ENG crew will often also include or operate a LiveU transmission unit, making them a self-contained broadcast unit that can go live from anywhere.
What Equipment Does an ENG Crew Use?
Professional ENG crews typically work with broadcast-standard equipment:
- Broadcast camera (Sony XDCAM, Canon Cinema EOS, or similar)
- Directional microphone (shotgun mic on a boom pole)
- Wireless lapel microphone system for interviews
- Portable LED lighting for indoor or low-light situations
- Tripod and fluid head for stable shots
- LiveU or similar cellular bonding unit for live transmission
Where Do ENG Crews Work?
ENG crews are designed to work in the field — anywhere a traditional studio setup would be impractical. Common locations include breaking news scenes, press conferences, sports venues, corporate offices, public events, and remote locations. Their compact kit and fast setup time make them ideal for time-sensitive productions.
ENG Crew vs. Full Production Crew
An ENG crew is optimised for speed and mobility. A full production crew is optimised for maximum technical quality and creative control. For news, corporate interviews, event coverage, and live broadcasting, an ENG crew is almost always the right choice. For scripted drama, high-end commercials, or large-scale multi-camera productions, a larger crew is typically needed.
