7 Key Benefits of LiveU Over Satellite Broadcasting
April 7, 2024If you’re budgeting for a professional ENG crew for the first time, it’s hard to know what to expect. Rates vary widely depending on a number of factors. Here’s a clear breakdown of what drives the cost — so you can budget accurately and avoid surprises.
Day Rate vs. Half-Day Rate
Most ENG crews quote either a full day rate (typically 8–10 hours) or a half-day rate (4–5 hours). For shoots that run over, overtime is usually charged at a pro-rata hourly rate. If you’re unsure how long your shoot will run, budget for a full day — it’s almost always more cost-effective than paying overtime on a half-day booking.
Crew Size
A one-person ENG crew (camera operator who also handles audio) is the most cost-effective option and works well for straightforward interviews, documentary-style shooting, and run-and-gun news coverage. A two-person crew (camera operator + sound recordist) produces better audio quality and allows the camera operator to focus entirely on picture. For live events or complex productions, additional crew members add cost but also capability.
Equipment
Most professional ENG crews include standard broadcast kit — camera, tripod, basic audio and lighting — in their day rate. Additional equipment costs come into play for:
- LiveU unit — for live broadcasting, this is a significant additional line item covering the unit and data costs
- Specialist lenses — long telephoto lenses for sports or wildlife, fast primes for low-light work
- Drone — aerial footage requires a separate drone operator and CAA/local authority permissions
- Advanced lighting — HMI lights, large LED panels, or a dedicated gaffer for high-end interview setups
Location and Travel
Local shoots within the crew’s home city typically incur no travel costs. Shoots in other cities or countries add travel time, transport, and often accommodation. For productions in multiple European locations, some crews offer a fixed travel day rate rather than itemising expenses — worth asking about when budgeting.
Turnaround and Deliverables
If you need footage delivered same-day — for a news broadcast or time-critical social post — expect a premium for the additional time pressure. Standard delivery (footage transferred and handed over same day or next morning) is usually included. If you also need basic editing, colour correction, or file transcoding, confirm whether this is included in the rate or quoted separately.
